How does Aromatherapy make me feel less stressed?

How does Aromatherapy make me feel less stressed?

Aromatherapy and how it works can often appear mysterious, we know it helps us feel calmer and more peaceful but how does it actually work?

Aromatherapy works on three levels- your sense of smell, inhalation and absorption through the skin.

Emotional support including soothing anxious thoughts, melting away stress and tension and helping you to feel calmer is by far the strongest pillar of Aromatherapy practice.

Aromatherapy is simply the application (the way you use) Essential Oils to promote health and wellbeing. Essential Oils are extracted from plants and when blended together their natural oils and aromas are used to bring the mind, body and spirit back into balance.

Aromatherapy is a wonderful complimentary therapy to 'compliment' other relaxation and wellness activities which can include anything that feels restful to you; walking, yoga, napping, watching TV having a bath, they all count.

Aromatherapy has been used for thousands of years to support holistic wellbeing and health. Today Aromatherapy is gaining in popularity due to our lives becoming more stressful and intense we're looking at natural ways to help us relax and unwind.

Aromatherapy blends ancient and spiritual wisdom and modern scientific research and we can now prove certain Essential Oils affect our brain and central nervous system in different ways.

Aromas from the natural plant and seed extracts (Essential Oils) have been shown to evoke emotions.

Our sense of smell is the most primitive of all our senses and it is linked to some of the oldest and deepest parts of the brain. As we breathe in any aroma (think coffee) it triggers emotional and even physical responses and allow vivid memory recall of people or places.

When we breathe in aromatic molecules, they travel to the top of the nose where the molecules come in contact with specialized nerve cells called Olfactory cells.  This process produces nerve impulses which travel to the limbic system, the part of the brain which is most concerned with survival, instincts and emotions.

It is thought by scientists that the activity of the nerve signal passing through this region causes mood change by altering brain chemistry.

Essential Oils are small enough to allow them to penetrate the skin. The tiny Essential Oil molecules travel through the epidermis (the top layer of skin) reaching the dermis (a deeper layer of skin) and to the blood vessels allowing them to circulate through to all body areas.

Essential oils contain antioxidants which help to prevent cell damage and protect against the build up of toxic waste in skin cells, thereby helping reduce signs of aging.
